ARMILLARY SPHERE
$149.95
GL017 - Renaissance scientists liked to have their portrait
painted with one hand on a Ptolemaic or Copernican armillary sphere, the epitome of wisdom
and knowledge. The difference between the two world systems was that one used the Earth as
the center of the Universe, while the other used the Sun. At that time people were burned
at the stake for professing opinions about the universe. Basically a model of the universe
as it was then known, the sphere is composed of connected rings linking the poles and
representing the equator and the ecliptic. Intricately assembled from bronze and wood
parts, the armillary sphere is a classical desk ornament for the broad and cultured of
mind.

CELESTRIAL GLOBE WITH COMPASS OR TERRESTRIAL
GLOBE WITH COMPASS $56.95
GL018/GL019 - Classic globes without a matching compass
were considered incomplete. Our wonderfully constructed bronze and wood stand with paper
globe includes a true reproduction of a 17th century 'dry' compass. The twelve paper gores
applied to the globe are printed after originals drawn by Gerardus Mercator, the inventor
of the Mercator projection, which was used from the 16th till the middle of the 20th
century.

THE AGE OF EXPLORATION KEEPSAKE $10.95
GL031 - A pocket universe
Its difficult to
describe the feeling of going through a box of rubbish in an antique store and coming
across a true treasure. This time my fingertips did the recognition even before my eyes
saw it. A small sharkskin covered sphere, two hinged halves, a tiny lock. Inside was a
precious little globe, issued by Ferguson of London in 1756. The inside of the case was
covered with twelve celestial paper gores, making the globe nest in the center of its
proper universe as known at the time. It happened in the sixties at Londons
Bermondsey Market. It was 5 AM, and I managed to buy it for less than twenty pounds. Why
did I later sell it? I guess because I was a budding antique dealer at the time, agonizing
over which direction to go; medieval religious art, or scientific and nautical?

AC102 - Lighthouses never cease to appeal to our
imagination. Is it their solitary locations? Or perhaps we long to be a lighthouse keeper?

railing to solve the existential mystery of the great beyond. Top and bottom open for ease

STEAMSHIP WINE COASTER $ 31.95
RL002 - We won't see the likes of them ever again.
Floating palaces, huge contraptions of steel and teak wood, smokestacks big enough to park
a truck. Glittering ballrooms, luxury Ritz restaurants, smoky lounges and bars. Cocktails
and happy hour, Dom Perignon and Veuve Clicquot. Walking by the moonlight on A-Deck,
holding hands, looking out over a silvery sea. Running like clockwork, from South Hampton
to New York, Hamburg to Boston, Le Havre to Rio. For the fortunate, a passage through
Panama and on to Hawaii and Hong Kong. In celebration of these majestic Liners we have
created a small collection of steamer memorabilia, using the railings, air intakes and
smoke stacks as icons. Each product is crafted from hand turned and shaped metal and wood
parts to reclaim that special feel. Relive memories of your most beloved cruise voyage.
Our wine coaster holds a traditional size bottle of wine.

WEATHER GLASS ANCHOR BRACKET
$49.95
WG012 - Our 17th century barometer continues to
fascinate. Because of its interesting story? Or its delicate and elegant accent to your
home. 17th century glassmakers, bored with the ubiquitous shape, sometimes added a bit of
color or decoration to the glass. One of the variations was called the 'Cockscomb'. In
combination with two new wrought iron wall appendages they make welcome additions to our
popular line of antique instruments.
